Why do you have to put liquids aerosols and gels in plastic bags when travelling?

Because it could be fairly easy to hide dangerous goods in those. So by having everything potentially dangerous so that it's easily inspected, the risk of something dangerous being smuggled onboard like that is reduced.

When traveling by air, there are security regulations that limit what you can bring on an airplane in your carry-on baggage. Liquids, gels and aerosols (including shampoo) may be no larger than 3 oz each, and all such materials must fir in a 1 qt ziplock bag. Lager bottles can go in a checked bag instead of a carry-on bag. Most reclosable zip bags are not leak proof, so while you could put shampoo and/or other liquids directly into one, it is not recommended without first putting the liquids into another type of container. However, if you did not want to use a separate container you could always use leak-proof reclosable bags.
