Coal is a store of energy that can be used for direct heating. running boilers. turbines for electricity, gas can also be extracted from it. and it is cheap. coal ca be replaced wit nuclear energy which can produce energy. However the coal lobby is very powerful and certain country's stand to lose a lot of money if it is left in the ground.
