Technical writers sometimes become technical editors, or the other way around. Most technical writers are currently employed in the computer, game and software industries, or in the field of engineering. Some technical writers work as independent contractors, while others work for a specific company or corporation. Others write books and articles for publishers and magazines. Most technical writers specialize in a particular field; for instance, writing aeronautic documentation, or writing about a particular kind of software, hardware, or computer operating system. In the past, a high school diploma and an ability to write clear, grammatical standard English were often enough to obtain work as a technical writer, but that’s much less common now. Now, in addition to a four year college degree (typically in English, communication, journalism, engineering, or in the field of technical writing) most technical writers need a specific field of expertise, for instance, a particular kind of software or hardware, or programming. Many fields specifically require a writing degree and expertise in a computer language or several years experience providing professional technical support. In addition to advanced proficiency with written and spoken English, technical writers need to be skilled with various desktop publishing, Web publishing, and graphics programs.
