We need the Pope because like any other family, we need a head of the family. For Roman Catholics, the Pope is the Vicar of Christ on earth. We have a doctrine {an unchanging belief} of Papal Infallibility. It means that in matters of faith and doctrine, the Pope cannot make a mistake. As his own person, Joseph Ratzinger, can be in error on other subjects or personal choices. When he acts in his official capacity as Pope Benedict XVI, he speaks as the heir to the Keys of the Kingdom of Christ on Earth. We accept this as an act of faith, and when your faith is firm, nothing can dissuade you. If you want to have faith or increase your faith, pray to the Holy Spirit for that gift of grace.
There is one central leadership that makes certain that all in the Church follow the same teachings and do not branch off into heretical or incorrect teachings. In the Catholic Church there may be some who disagree with the pope's rulings, at least all are on the same page. The above statement was related to me by an Anglican priest who felt so frustrated because of these very issues and no one to clarify the situation.
