This houses good bacteria, that good bacteria, once established (it takes at least a month to be established enough to support fish) will eat up harmful properties in the water, such as ammonia and nitrites, and spit them back out as less harmful nitrates. Without this bacteria ammonia and nitrites will fluctuate and kill your fish!
