This is kind of a rude question to ask someone... but if you are asking for yourself, or just asking in general about people, perhaps it is worth an answer.
I think there are some major divisions in the reasons for this. Some people are without a valentine by personal choice. They don't want to put in the effort that a relationship requires, or they would rather be alone than play the meat market game.
Other people are without a valentine only because they are in between relationships, and the timing is bad. They might be fresh out of one relationship and planning to launch into a new one, but not in time for the holiday.
Other people really want to be in a relationship, but are unable to be. Perhaps they can't find someone to date, or they want a relationship they can't have, and are unable to move on until they mentally resolve that issue.
Other people want human contact underneath, but their experience with relationships has made them so bitter that they drive everyone away. I'm kind of in this category. It's just hard to believe in or trust people sometimes. Maybe I'll move on someday... maybe we all can. I just don't see it yet.
