headlights and the brake switch are "hot" (always have power going to them)
they are on there own powersource,
the ignition is also on its own powersource, when you turn the key it pushes a lever forward contacting the switch inside the column, your question is vague,what don't you have ? cranking, power to ignition, troubleshooting is the key to fixing any vehicle... its a series of tests leading to fixing the problem

The brake lights and the tail lights are separate circuits. Check the brake light fuse, then check the brake light bulbs, then check the brake light switch.

You can only turn off the headlights by applying the emergency brake. When the emergency brake is on, the headlights will not light. Otherwise the best of my expererience is that they are on all the time. If you have remote start, put the emergency brake on before you leave the vehicle and when you remote start it, the headlights will not be on, but the driving lights (if switch is on) will be on as well as the parking lights.

Why are your trailer brake lights staying on when you turn your headlights on?
First you need to understand that most, if not all, vehicle [autos, trucks, and trailers] rear lighting systems have both tail light bulbs and brake light bulbs, OR a single bulb on each side [right and left] that each have two filaments [what glows when electricity is applied]. The tail lights are supposed to be on when the headlights, or parking lights, in the towing vehicle are turned on. The separate brake light bulb, or brake light filament in the dual filament bulbs is only supposed to turn on when the brake pedal is depressed, and the towing vehicle brake lights are on. I suspect that what you are calling brake lights are actually the tail lights. To check this out, run some tests. Have an assistant sit in the vehicle and do the following on your command: 1. Apply brakes by pressing on the brake pedal. The brake lights should turn on. 2. With foot OFF of the brake, turn on the headlights. The trailer tail lights should turn on. 3. With the headlights on, have the assistant depress the break pedal. Even though the tail lights are already on, the brake lights should come on also, causing the trailer lights to brighten noticeably 4. While you're checking, have the assistant turn the ignition key to on, and one at a time test the left and right turn signals. Again, I think what you think are brake lights, are actually the tail ligts.

On my 98 sunfire, the tail lights and marker lights only work if you turn on the headlights. If only the daytime lights are on, the Pontiac on the trunk is illuminated but no other lights at the rear until brakes or turn signals are activated. This is common with a lot of vehicles out there. Daytime running lights are not necessarily the same candle power as the headlights. I can tell a big difference in mine.

Once you release the parking brake, the lights will come on. and while driving switch the manual control to headlighs on, press the dome override button back to back about 4 times and a ding will then signal manual headlights. just make sure your headlights are on cuz i was playing one night and blacked out on the highway.. haha
