Paint is used as an exterior finish to prevent rot or corrosion of the substrate. Exterior paints form a water and air tight coating that prevents the ingress of water and air and so protects the underlying material. Other coating can offer a similar protection such as varnish although paint offers a wide variety of color as well as texture.

The one down side is if you paint the handles and don't like the results, there is no going backwards, you can't remove the paint once it has cured.

Interior paint is more porous and less resistant to the elements than a paint actually devised to use outside. A flat paint finish or a satin paint finish is better outside, a gloss paint finish can also be used but only sparingly, as it reflects light and may highlight more flaws.
