Our bodies need oxygen every single minute of every single day of our lifes (whether your awake or asleep). If we stopped breathing while we are asleep 2 things will happen: 1. Carbon dioxide levels in our bodies will increase (it is essential to get rid of this carbon dioxide gas from our body) and 2. Without oxygen, the cells in our body will stop working and as a result our organs and eventually our systems will all shut down. If this happens, death will result.

The breathing is important to provide us with a sufficient amount of oxygen that is used by the cells to produce energy, and thus the activity of many cells does not stop even at night like cardiac and smooth cells.
So the breathing does not stop

∙ 14y agoThis probably has to do with the change in positioning. Going from upright and erect to relaxed and laying down. Plus, your body has started to slow down your breathing because you are working on sleeping and it realizes that. When people sleep they take slower, deeper breathes.
