Why do you swear in court when the bible says not to swear?

Added: Like many words in the confusing English language, the word "swear" has several meanings... in this case it is used to mean "AFFIRM."

No it does not specifically say not to, but it is included in the sins, so yes

Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black. But let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No.' For whatever is more than these is from the evil one. [NKJV]

The Scripture also indicates that a faithful believer is sullied up, when hearing a person swearing: "And if a soul sin, and hear the voice of swearing, and is a witness, whether he hath seen or known of it; if he do not utter it, then he shall bear his iniquity...And it shall be, when he shall be guilty in one of these things, that he shall confess that he hath sinned in that thing: And he shall bring his trespass offering unto the LORD for his sin which he hath sinned." Leviticus 5:1,5,6.

Jesus had indicated that this world will bring spiritual contamination to the Christian believer, when He washed the disciples feet: "He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit [way, except his feet]." When a person went to the Roman bath house, his feet would get dirty coming home in his sandals. So, to be cleaned up completely, one would have to wash his feet from the dirt he received on the way home. The picture that Jesus was showing is that the world's sinfulness, which includes cursing, needs to be spiritually washed off the Christian's heart, to be pure once again.
