The French gave up because of many overwhelming technical difficulties and significant loss of life. There were many failures, because it is one of the most difficult engineering tasks ever attempted, both because of technical difficulties and the physical ravages of malaria and yellow fever. Spain began the idea of a canal across the Isthmus of Panama as early as 1534. The Spanish were followed by the Scottish in 1698, who also failed. In 1880, the French tried their hand at the project, but came to a screeching halt in 1893 after multiple technical failures and excessive equipment rusting because of the humid conditions. The loss of an estimated 22,000 workers during the eight-year French fiasco was the final straw and caused the French to drop the project.
Project and Production are 2 totally different concepts, so I don't think it's reasonable to compare them together. The are 4 phases in the project lifecycle: * Initiating * Planning * Implementing * Closing

The United States spent $350 million dollars to build the Panama Canal. Panama invested $10 million of their own money on this project. The US also made a payment to Colombia, from which Panama broke away from.
Colombia owned Panama and would not let the canal be built.
The Panama Canal connects the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean.
I think It's agreed to hire workers from both Panama and Colombia.
