Tells us they were human and humanity hasn't changed much. People spend weekends watching football and other sports. They spend millions of dollars on games and sportswear. At least the Roman games were free instead of supporting sports leagues that make billions. There is no difference between us and the Romans watching violence in a sport.

the romans

valued violent combats because they where poor and at the end of each show a person would give out wheat and money. they also valued a peaceful family because if you where a roman citizen then you had to have pride.

Some historians have formulated the idea that the violent combat was a patriotic statement. The winner (gladiator, winner of the naval combat, animals hunt winner, etc.) represented Rome and the Roman people. The loosers were the conquered. In other words, they, the Roman people, were victorious over man and nature and these victories were acted out in the arena.
