Gold has to be found through many hours of work, diamonds the same. Wampum belts were made by manufacturing thousands of tiny beads from shell. the shells were then individually pierced and then strung together. The finished belt was aesthetically satisfying. It had everything going for it to be highly prized in its own right. After all that work it was used to commemorate important events which further increased the value.
