Many people feel so strongly about slavery because it was enforced servitude of an entire race of people against their will. It created the popular belief that the Negroes, or Africans (now politically correct to call them African-Americans), were inferior. This belief was extremely popular among most people around the world. Many people feel so strongly about slavery because of the Emancipation Proclamation, enforced by Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln created this Proclamation to punish the South for their secession from the Union as part of the Reconstruction of the South. Contrary to popular belief, this Proclamation did not free all slaves in America, but only those south of the Mason Dixon Line, of those states that rebelled. Lincoln himself did not free his own slaves. There is strong controversy to these facts, and many people do not learn this, because as the saying goes 'The winners write the history books', meaning the Northern historians wrote what made them look good.
