Why do you think quackery might appeal to a person's emotions instead of reason if that person had an incurable disease?

Can't you imagine if you had an incurable disease, that you would try just about anything to still live and be around for your friends and family? I have seen this many times. I wondered why someone with terminal lung cancer would do this, even if gave only an extra 3 or 4 months to live, hoping to increase it to many years.
The will to live is ingrained 'in our DNA'.
