ironclad ships
In the American Civil War, the South did not have a formal navy. It had some naval ships but it never organized them into a fleet. The Merrimac was its first ironclad. The Neuse was its only ironclad that survived the entire war. It built several submarines.
Ships that were plated with iron. Famous ones are the Merrimack and the Monitor. The invention of the ironclad scared Europe, seeing they did not have that technology. Cannon balls just bounced off of the ships. The south came up with these first, but then the North made a better version with 40+ patented items, including the rotating turret.
Virginia
The north had the entire south blackaded by union warships so the south built small fast ships to get around them and export their supplies. However, they still couldn't much out soy they built an ironclad ship named the Virginia to estroy the blockade set by the North. They succeeded in destroying two union ships before the union destroyed the Virginia using a ironclad of their own.
The CSS Virginia, formerly the USS Merrimack, was but one of the Confederate ironclads. It is famous from the Battle of Hampton Roads with the USS Monitor. This was the first ever clash between two ironclad ships. The battle occurred March 9th, 1862.
