Located between China and India, the region known today as Southeast Asia was strongly influenced by both of these powerful neighbors. Even so, the distinct cultures of Southeast Asia retained their own unique identities.
Countries grouped with southeast Asia include Indonesia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. Note that Australia is not grouped with Southeast Asia.

The kingdom in southeast Asia before the colonial time mostly influence by India. The kingdom and the King name is like India. The religion of people in Southeast Asia until today got influence from India and China. Even Muslim in Southeast Asia is not coming from Middle East, but from India Christian is spread to Southeast Asia during colonial time.
They're only similar in that they're both in asia. One's in southcentral and one's in southeast asia. If you're trying to get that "colony" comparison going...India didn't fight Britain for 9 yrs to gain independence, like Vietnam fought France.
