Feudalism was like other systems in the middle ages, but had the added problem of a weak central government and a resulting need for local stability. The feudal society had the problem of dealing with invasions, rebellions, raids, and so on without immediate leadership of a king and national army. The way to do this was to establish a hierarchy of leadership, which could organize on a local or regional basis.
