The French revolution was the first to prove that not only could you overthrow a monarch, but there were also alternatives to monarchy, and if you wanted to you could create an entirely new type of social order. Although the revolution itself committed many hideous crimes and injustices, the ideals of the revolution, which were summarized as "liberty, fraternity, equality" were very inspiring to many people.
