For the most part, particularly in the early years, it was very unequal. Strong male characters took the lead with the woman providing either comedy relief or visual candy, sometimes both. Given the male dominated role of enforcer, strong man and hero, it made sense. Pick almost any SF movie and you see it. In more modern times, females have taken stronger roles in the genre. Sigourney Weaver in the Alien series being a prime example. Still lots of eye candy in my opinion, but a strong central character. Women also seem to dominate the role of the evil side of things. Men in Black 2 comes to mind.
