Vinegar and bicarbonate of soda can extinguish somefires, because these two substances react to form carbon dioxide gas, which can not support combustion and is denser than air, so that it tends to settle over a burning material and thereby cut off the supply of atmospheric oxygen that the fire requires to continue burning.
