Actually, you use latitude together with longitude to pinpoint any location on planet earth, because first you need to know where you are in the world, and second, way-finding aids and street signs don't exist everywhere.

For example, 75% of planet earth is ocean; on ice caps and in mountains, you need to be able to locate yourself -- or someone else. Lat/ long are the exact tools you need to identify any precise location.
