Can be a few things. You can be using too low an octane fuel. But that is highly unlikely unless you have a high compression engine installed. Can also be the engine is not timed correctly. Check the timing. More than likely the problem is carbon build up in this 31 year old engine. You have carbon build up on the pistons which is causing pre detonation. There are products on the market that will help remove carbon from your engine. Seafoam is one of them and it works quite well. You can also remove the heads and manually remove the carbon. You can try that or you can switch to a higher octane fuel. This pinging is harmful to your engine over the long haul so do whatever is necessary to remedy this.
