It may have something to do with the dishwashing powder or liquid used in the dishwasher.Since my first question in December on why aluminum turned black in the dishwasher, I have done further research. I was using Cascade which I have used for years. I switched to Finish which is made by the same company that makes Jet Dry. I then washed a different aluminum pan in the dishwasher and it was fine.I recently ADDED JetDry to my dishwasher--dispenser was empty for a long while. THREE aluminum pans turned black with Cascase tablets and JetDry. It's disgusting! Anyone have answers?

Cast iron will react to acids in foods. Normally this won't be a problem if the cookware is properly seasoned and oiled. That applies to when you are actually cooking. But never store food -- especially with any acid content at all long-term in cast iron as the food will absorb the seasoned layer, and if highly acidic with then taste metallic.
If the surface that is coming off is teflon (typically gray or black in color), you need to throw the pots away and replace them. There is some evidence that ingesting teflon is not safe.

the black hole
I suggest running the dishwasher with detergent and about a quarter cup of laundry bleach. Let run the full cycle at high heat. Even if a dishwasher is not used often there is still moisture in it, the black is most likely some type of mold.
