It is because as your nails grow they loose support from the nail bed.
The above answer is false. My nails are very short and they grown downwards also.
It may be a vitamin deficiency OR it could be a health related isue such as heart or respiratory problems. I have emphysema and know for a fact this is true.

∙ 14y agoI heard from an acupuncturist that it is bad lungs. I two friends who had emphysema and they both had that condition. Maybe it is not enough oxygen to the extremities?
