Your switch either has a short or is going out
If you have to hold the headlight switch out to keep the lights on, then the switch itself is bad. The switch should be a fairly easy part to replace.
Remove the headlight switch and check it. You will probably find it and its plug melted.
I am no expert but, it sounds like the headlight switch is bad. As far as the brights staying on when you hold the lever back ... some cars are designed that way ... moving the lever one way turns bright lights on without having to hold the lever and moving the lever the opposite direction only flashes the bright lights when the lever is held in that position. If you move the lever in the other direction and the brights stay on without holding the lever, this is normal. But, I still lean towards the headlight switch for the low beam problem. Of course, check the lights (bulbs) themselves before replacing the switch ... it's odd but maybe both low beams lights are burned out. Hope this helps.
you needa get a new flasher go to an auto zone to get that itll run about 5 bucks If you own a GM product and depending on the year, there is an O on the headlight switch. Turn the switch to that position and hold it about 2 secs the lights will go out.
On the body of the switch behind the dash right where it comes through the dash, there is a small spring loaded button. You will have to feel it. Push down on the button and the control know for the lights will pull out. On the face of the dash where the rod came out, there is a thin flat nut holding the switch to the dash. Unscrew this nut and the switch will come out. After installing the new switch, the knob and rod will just push in, you do not need to hold the button down on the switch. The button on the switch is about half the diameter of a pencil.
When the headlight switch fails, you'll need to replace the entire combination switch. Here is the procedure to replace the headlight switch on your Chevy Cavalier: 1) Unscrew the screws on the bottom and top of the steering wheel column cover, using a screwdriver and pull the bottom and top of the steering wheel column cover forward and down to remove it. 2) Unscrew the two screws that hold the headlight switch to the steering column. Pull the headlight switch off the steering column. Unplug the electrical connector running to the headlight switch. 3) Connect the electrical connector to the new headlight switch and secure the headlight switch to the steering column using the factory mounting screws and a cross-point screwdriver. Reassemble the steering column cover.
With the light switch in the off position, slightly turn as if you are turning the lights on, while pushing in lightly, this will turn the "toggle" type tabs that hold the unit in place and then just pull out the unit, disconnect the wiring harness and install in reverse.
switch is going bad my friend eBay
A combination switch is the unit behind the steering wheel that hold the controls for the lights, cruise control and window washer.
Yes, and hopefully nothing else.
There is a button on the back side of the switch that you push and hold while you pull the light knob out Forward. After this you can unscrew the hand nut either on the front or back of the switch that allows removal of the switch.
First remove the wiper and headlight switch knobs. They will pull off with force, then you will under stand how they go back on. Remove cover under dash to view fuses. Take two screw out that hold the fuse panel. The dash cover around the wiper and headlight switch actually pops off when pryed on. Once this cover is off remove the nut around the headlight switch and it will pull out, but you need to get the fuse panel out of the way. The switch it self has a pull out bar that can also be taken out by depressing the button brad on the switch itself.
