First remove the wiper and headlight switch knobs. They will pull off with force, then you will under stand how they go back on. Remove cover under dash to view fuses. Take two screw out that hold the fuse panel. The dash cover around the wiper and headlight switch actually pops off when pryed on. Once this cover is off remove the nut around the headlight switch and it will pull out, but you need to get the fuse panel out of the way. The switch it self has a pull out bar that can also be taken out by depressing the button brad on the switch itself.

Replacing the ignition switch actuator on a 1988 Ford f150 is a complicated and multi-step process. First, remove the necessary panels to gain access to the steering column. Second, remove the screws and bolts holding the steering column to the dash. Third, locate the ignition switch and remove the actuator rod, replacing it with a new one. Re-attach everything to the dash and replace the panels. If this does not work, or seems too confusing, it may be in one's best interest to seek out a professional mechanic.
after electrcally disconnecting the switch there should be a small button on the bottom of the switch body that will release the switch shaft. then just pull it out and do the inverse to put the new one in.

pull your light switch out and use a small screw driver to push clip and remove the plastic tip on the head light switch then remove the black trim around the gauge cluster
I have the same problem. You can't seem to take it off from the outside. All I was told is that you have to unscrew it from the inside somehow.
Under the hood.
To the right of your headlight switch is a dimmer switch for your gauge cluster lighting - I'm not sure if it's the same on your F150 as my Explorer but when my dimmer switch is rotated all the way up it turns on my interior lights . Also if you have a door ajar light lit up in your gauge cluster , you probably have a sticking door ajar switch
