that usually happens when you turn the heat on after it has not been in use for a long time If you have forced air heat, the blower motor could be failing. You might need to have service man come and check it.

If it's a gas heater it could be a gas leak. It is probably best to get it checked out. the first few times i use the heat-it smells-the dust in the duct system is pulling into furnace , and burning...goes away. can you describe the smell .. is it gas, forced hot air( vents / ducts ) or hot water and radiators- not likely- this info. are nedded to answer accurately...
