Since it is shutting down while it is running that tells me your alternator is not putting out enough current and needs replaced. You will need to charge the battery fully prior to starting after installing the new alternator or you could burn out the new alternator as well. I.King

If you able to restart after a few minutes, then your CMP is defective.
If the check engine light is on...might be a dirty EGR valve.
Sounds like it could be vapor locking. Try putting a few wooden clothes pins on fuel line
There are several warning lights on the dashboard. A red light on the dashboard may mean that there is a problem. Stop the car, switch off the engine and restart again.

If your Dakota shuts down after 5 or 10 seconds then change the map sensor. If it shuts down after 3 or 4 minutes of driving and won't restart look for a bad harmonic balancer. Experienced both!
check your coil
While driving my car died. The check engine, brake and battery light all came on. It did restart after about 10 minutes and died again 10 minutes later after idling for about 5 minutes. What would cause this? You have to take your car to a shop that can read the obdII fault codes. And then take it from there ...

Just try again in a few minutes or restart your computer.
Start with a new fuel filter since it is relatively cheap, then check the fuel pump if the problem persists. Actually, the problem was with the Distributor Stator.
