Because he didn't! Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone.

Actually Thomas Edison did invent the carbon transmitter which allowed practical transmission of sound over longer distances, a huge improvement over Bell's design, which it replaced in the 1880s. The notion that Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone is a little misleading. A number of people invented various technologies that were used in telephones, including Alexander Graham Bell. The type of telephone Bell invented was not very practical and quickly became obsolete. His business model was the key to his success. The American Bell Telephone Company either developed or acquired the rights to the differentcomponentsthat made up the telephone, and fended off challenges to Bell's patents, eventuallydominatingthe market.
