Anne Boleyn (c1501-07 - 1536), the second wife of Henry VIII (1491 - 1547) provided a fascinating historical story. Capturing the love of a powerful monarch, causing all sorts of historical reforms to take place (the break with Rome, etc.), eventually marrying the king, but failing him on the thing he wanted most - a male heir. Anne had made many enemies at court, and her failure to provide the male heir was probably the cause of Anne being accused on trumped up charges of adultery, incest, witchcraft - all treasonable. Condemned to death, even her execution was unusual. Her alleged offences should have seen her burned at the stake, but this was commuted to beheading. But, rather than let her face the axe (which wasn't always an accurate option), Henry sent for an expert French swordsman to behead Anne. She went bravely to her death on 19 May 1536, even joking about how slim her neck was, the night before the execution. Her body was put in an arrow chest and interred in the chapel of St. Peter ad Vincula at the Tower of London. Probably one of the most important reasons that Anne Boleyn is still well known today, is that she was the mother of one of the greatest monarchs: Elizabeth I (1533 - 1603) This was her posthumous triumph.
