Picture the Earth and the sun. The sun's rays go straight through space. The first thing the rays of the sun touch is the equator. The last things the rays hit are the north and south pole. The above accounts partly for the low temperatures in Antarctica, but it is the earth's tilt that is responsible for the long nights.

During summer, Antarctica actually has a lot of daylight hours as the sun never sets. This is caused by the same reason in reverse that results in the long winter nights. If the Southern Hemisphere is tilted away from the sun, as happens during winter, the latitude of Antarctica is so high that the sun never rises for a number of weeks or months. When it is tilted toward the sun, it does not experience a sunset for a time.

Antarctica is located south of 66 degrees S, so everywhere on the continent to 90 degrees S, experiences at least one 24-hour period of no sunset. At the South Pole -- 90 degrees, this period is six months.

The reason is because the southern hemisphere of the earth tilts toward the sun during its summer months.

Sunrises and sunsets in both polar regions are irregular beyond each of the polar circles.

The Arctic Circle and the Antarctic Circle mark the locations on planet earth where the geography experiences at least one 24-hour period of no sunrise/ no sunset.

At the South Pole, there is one sunrise per year and one sunset per year.

The tilt of the Earth puts either one of the poles in constant daylight or darkness, polar areas don't rotate to the other side of the globe, therefore keeping a pole in daylight in summer and darkness in winter.

Would daylight savings be useful to Antarctica?

Scientific stations in Antarctica usually operate on the local time for the government that they serve. There is no standard time in Antarctica. If the country headquarters is on daylight savings time, then so is the Antarctic base. However, when the sun is up 24 hours out of the day, there's not much value to the notion.
