A large majority of the world's population follows a religion, and that religion is always important to its followers. Hence, Catholicism is important to Catholics. Catholicism matters, to at least some extent, for non-Catholics in countries with a significant proportion of Catholics in the population because of the insistence of many Catholics that their government implement laws consistent with Catholic values.

Catholicism also matters because of the diplomatic leverage its leader, the pope, gains from being the leader of an independent country, no matter how small.
