some central air systems use metal / tin ductwork (some use plastic)
if the metal ducts are installed improperly the ducts pucker outward when the duct is pressurized by the fan and collapse when the fan goes off. This movement of the metal ductwork causes a banging or knocking noise on every startup and shutdown.
It can sometimes be caused by a unintended blockage of the air flow.
My home air conditioning unit was making a knocking sound more like a whoop whoop type of knock when the main blower motor was winding down. Turned out to be the fan wires that were bumping against the fan cowling - tapped them up. GGB.
