Compared to the United States (1 in each 800), the rate of incidence for Down syndrome in Mexico (1 in each 444) is not specially high, although it nearly doubles the former figure. This is due to the fact that most people in Mexico have poor health care, including prenatal care thus preventing a correct diagnosis. Besides, even if a proper diagnosis is made, many people don't terminate the pregnancy for religious reasons.
Both factors result in many children being born with congenital abnormalities, including those with Down syndrome.
