In the original book, it is written that Ellen was in love with a cousin of year, but they were not permitted to marry, the young man left Savannah and died in a fight in another city, when Ellen was infmd abt this, she was heart broken and blamed her family for his death.
When she met Gerald O'Hara, she decided to marry him, eventough her family did once again, not approve. It was either marriage to him or she would go into a convent.
Mortified of the idea that his youngest, beloved and most beautiful daughter would go into a convent, her father reluctantly gave his permission to marry O'Hara.
Not marrried out of love, the marriage turned out to be stable and loving tough.
