There were a number of reasons. Most important was that Gerald Ford inherited the office from an extremely unpopular President, Richard Nixon. Next the administration's failure to control the economy and inflation reaching near double-digit levels served to frustrate and anger the general population. Finally the end of the Vietnam War brought the perception of weakness abroad.
