In the past, in Old Testament history we learn that God chose a people to be a blessing on the world. This people was Israel. There was virtually no belief in the one true God except the Israelites, all other people were godless heathen. These heathen were a threat against the chosen nation and many wars were fought. God at times defeated the enemy to protect Israel so that the chosen Messiah would not be hindered in coming.
God is not a killer, a murderer. Today God is still the God He was, but today there is a Savior (the Messiah) to be gained and God gives persons every chance to come to that Savior. Man only lives a certain amount of years on this earth and if they do not choose the Savior in that allotted time they die without God. He does not kill them, they die because their allotted time is up. God is forgiving if a person chooses Him and he is loving, but He is also Holy and hates sin. If a person does not choose God and continues in sin they die physically like everyone else, but then they die what is called the "second death" which happens after the Great White Throne Judgment. That "second death" is being found guilty and thrown into the Lake of Fire.
Prophecies not yet fulfill reveal that God will fight for His chosen nation Israel and many will die. Just as in the beginning men are becomingly more evil and bold so that God has to intervene until His purpose is fulfilled.
