In the same chapter, at verses 4-6, Jesus said, "“Did YOU not read that he who created them from [the] beginning made them male and female and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and his mother and will stick to his wife, and the two will be one flesh’? So that they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has yoked together let no man put apart.” Here, he was stressing the permanance of marriage, and that no one is to put the two apart. Therefore, Jesus did not mean that one should literally leave their mate for the sake of the kingdom. What he was indicating was that one must not allow anything to hinder them from interests pertaining to God's kingdom, even if that resistance were to come from family members. Peter, in the same conversation, in verse 27, said," “Look! We have left all things and followed you; what actually will there be for us?" Peter was a married man. Years later, in 1 Corinthians 9:5, we read that Peter (Cephas) took his wife along on missionary tours. So Peter didn't leave his wife, and obviously understood Jesus use of the word "leave" not to neccessarily be taken literally.
