The Gulf Stream. Warm moist air flows from the Mexican Gulf Region North East over the UK
With the climate harsh there is a short growing season, there for there are small farms than the middle colonies.

Pretty good. The climate was about 4 degrees Celcius warmer than today so they could keep livestock and even farm the land, to some degree. Fishing was essential, as was wood/timber from North America.
The Gulf Stream makes England's climate much warmer than it would otherwise be. The Gulf Stream originates at the tip of Florida, and along with the North Atlantic Drift, follows the eastern coastlines of the United States and Newfoundland before crossing the Atlantic Ocean.
Even though it has a more northerly latitude, England has a much warmer climate than Nova Scotia. The climate of New England was generally very similar to England or France, with only minor differences. It was a maritime climate (which means that its temperature is cooler in the summer but warmer in the winter than further in-land) and this climate helped promote growing crops because winter was shorter and growing season longer. The climate was not, however, well-suited to growing special tropical crops, like tobacco, indigo, or sugar, because it was note warm enough. The level of rain was less than England at the time but higher than the modern Midwest.
