Because Circe tells Odysseus that she will only return his men to normal if he takes her to bed, so he does, actually remaining with her for what seems to be a few days. However, time passes differently in Circe's castle and, while Odysseus thinks that he has only been with Circe a few days, a whole year goes by in the outside world.

Odysseus remains with Circe for a year because she offers him hospitality and guidance on his journey home. He also stays to ensure the safety and well-being of his men who are under Circe's enchantment. Additionally, Odysseus learns important information from Circe about his future challenges and how to navigate them.
