Why does Saab 900 engine whine when idle and get lowder the faster you go?

quite honestly, my family has had about five 900's. From 84 to 91 years, 8 or 16 v, all non-turbo, all make a distinctive sound. If there is nothing wrong with the car that is just the way else cars sound.
* Aftermarket belts are wider than the belts from Saab, this can cause a whine aslo.
