basically because you settings must have been set to scan the whole drive when you start up your computer.

I had this problem with mine (1995 Civic) and after the 3rd mechanic got it, all he did was replace the computer and it works fine. The others had no clue there was a computer on board.
START BUTTON> RUN> "type" MSCONFIG > go to start up tab > uncheck groove related entries
If you have to change it every time you start the computer than it is most likely a driver issue. Make sure you have the most recent drivers.
