The bags are packed and sealed in an air-tight bag on the ground. As the airplane climbs higher in altitude, the air pressure drops or gets lower. Above 12,000 feet, a passenger airplane has an air conditioning system that pressurizes the airplane to keep the passengers comfortable. This pressure is equal to about the same pressure if you were at 7,000 to 8,000 feet.

Since the air pressure drops, the pressure inside the Bag is now more than it is outside the bag. Why? The volume of air in the bag can't change. So as the air pressure drops outside the bag, the air inside the bag expands.

The opposite would happen if you took the bag under water to the bottom of your pool. It would get smaller.

Also, try this. (Of course, airlines don't serve salad anymore) When you are in an airplane at cruise altitude, take a plastic container of Ranch salad dressing or equivalent. Shake it around to coat the entire inside of the container. Then slowly pull the tab. When it "opens" the Ranch dressing will pop out. The air rushes out of the container and the thick dressing that coats the inside is shot out too.

If there is a bag of chips on airplane why does it puff up while in flight?

Air pressure.

Why does a bag of chips puff up when you take them to mammoth?

A bag of chips will puff up when it is taken to mammoth because the bag has a pressure of 1 ATM usually when packaged, but when it gets to a higher altitude, the pressure of the air around it is less than inside the bag thus causing an increase in volume.

Why did my bag of chips puff up in the freezer?

Your bag of chips puffed up in the freezer due to the expansion of air inside the bag as it cooled down. When the temperature drops, the air contracts, creating a vacuum effect, but if the bag is sealed tightly, the pressure difference can cause it to puff up. Additionally, any moisture present in the bag can freeze and expand, contributing to the puffed appearance.

If a bag of potato chips weighs 50 grams and you crush the chips into the smallest pieces and reweigh the bag how much will it way?

The bag of chips will weigh the same amount as before because crushing them up does not involve adding or removing any of the chips

What happens to a crisps packet on an airplane?

Bags of chips (crisps) can expand in an airplane. A bag of chips on the ground doesn't appear to be inflated because the outside air pressure is high. As the elevation increases (like in an airplane) the outside air pressure decreases, which means that there is also less pressure in the bag. As the pressure decreases in the bag, the gas inside wants to take up more room and it expands (similar to what happens when the pressure is released from a can of soda). However, the cabins of most airplanes are pressurized, so you would not be able to see any expansion.

Why does a bag of chips blow up like a balloon when you go up to the mountain?

At higher altitudes, the air pressure surrounding the bag of chips decreases while the air pressure inside the bag remains the same. This pressure difference causes the bag to expand and appear inflated like a balloon.

How many ounces of liquid can I bring in my carry-on bag on an airplane?

You can bring containers with up to 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) of liquid in your carry-on bag on an airplane. These containers must be placed in a clear, quart-sized plastic bag for security screening.

Why does a brown paper bag holding potato chips become dicolored and soggy over time?

The oil that's in the chips is soaked up by the brown paper bag. Plastic bags like they come in originally don't soak up the oil so you never see this until the chips are in an absorbant container. They same thing will happen if you put the chips in a bowl lined with paper towels or a napkin. The bowl liner become oily and discolored. Now you know how much fat is in potato chips.

What happens to a potato chip bag as it warms in the heat of the sun?

If it hasn't been opened, the air particles inside gain kinetic energy, meaning that the bag will expand and eventually pop. Then the sun's heat is transferred into the particles of the bag, and so the particles move apart, melting the bag. If extreme heat, the bag may face sublimation. (Looking at the particle matter through the particle theory of matter.)
