Accurate AnswerDemons predate Christianity. Christianity is only 2000 years old and somehow, they act as if they are chosen demonology experts. The problem: Where do they get their source? The Bible. The Bible was written in an attempt to stamp out older religions, even if it meant genocide of innocent people. (the story is deeper and more complex if you do your research, but I digress) My point is, if you want to know the intentions of a demon.. you may want to look into the older/wiser/experts on the origins of them.

I'm far from a Satanist, but I am a firm believer that this world is older than 2,000 years old. Christians label ANYTHING that isn't apart of their cult as "Evil, demonic, satanic" so it isn't fair to go by their source. (No offense)

Demon is a greek term (stemming from the word "daemon") and it means "spiritual guardian" the term became "evil" when Christians made it so because it didn't agree with THEIR beliefs. But it is said that every person has their own spiritual companion (the church knows that once you know this, you can no longer RELY on it for spiritual guidance and they'll have no crutch to lean on, no crutch, no $$$)

Daemons can do harm if your spirit is weak, depressed, etc (since it is a reflection of your own spirit.. it will bear itself in the form of your subconscious) having a heart that focuses on the good/light/pure/love can easily rid you of negative energies/vibes ... evolving your daemon companion into something benevolent. :)

Demons come when they are "summoned", which does not mean that they are able to be controlled by humans, which they aren't only God can control them and maybe Satan. They are summoned by certain events, and anything that Satan might say (maybe).

If you mess around with ouija boards, seances, voodoo, that whole bloody Mary bathroom thing, you could be assaulted/mauled/traumatized by demons, if you aren't saved.

The above answer quoting 2 Timothy 2:26 can be very misleading if taken out of context. A demon cannot come to you and take you captive at his will. Looking at this scripture in context we see that the full quote is: From the NIV 2 Timothy 2:24 - 26

24And the Lord's servant must not quarrel; instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. 25Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, 26and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.

We see here the context is of how a servant of the Lord is to respond to people who have fallen into the trap of the devil, and them having fallen enables the devil to take them captive to do his (the devils) will.

We have total authority over the devil and at the name of Jesus he will obey the command to go. Our focus should be on the freedom we have in Jesus and the truth that when you have made Jesus Lord of your life the devil has no authority over you.
