Most of the time it is because the thermostat has gone bad and is not opening at the proper temperature. Cure: replace thermostat. If the thermostat has been replaced, flush the radiator. Buildup of residue in the bottom of the radiato0r will cause overheating, but it is maintained over heating, not temporary.
A bad thermostat can cause an overheat. A bad temp sensor can show an overheat when the temperature is normal.

temp gauge is stuck on hot
Generally the car has overheated. If your trying to figure what caused it to overheat, first check the radiator fluid, if full, it could be your thermostat has gone bad.
I have a 1998 Ford Thunderbird that is overheating only during intown driving. In testing, I noticed that the fan is not kicking in when the temp is running hot. Where do I find the temp sensor and the fan relay?
fuse block by park brake. check for bab fuse first.
I have a similar problem.....93 Ranger that the temp gauge doesn't work. The engine doesn't overheat. I see different ohmage readings when engine is cold and when it is warmed up, so seems the temp sensor is operating ok. The reference voltage on the temp sensor wire is 5 volts with the key on. Where is the fuse wire located? thanks. My email address is: earl@ccny.com
The temp may not go up until the antifreeze leaks way down. Or the temp gauge may not be working right. The leak needs to be fixed, or the engine can overheat and cause permanent damage.
