It usually occurs on looks or intelligence. Sometimes it will be on your personality. But a lot of teen boys start to get very hormonal, and all they think about is sex.
Here's what I think:
Males are meant to be with women: that's how we make offspring and not go extinct. So, it's just instinct. As for being attracted to somebody, it's like natural selection. People might be chosen for their good personalities or appearance, therefore survives. (I didn't actually research this and it is, like I said, just what I think. xD)
