Because Glycerol and glass have the same refractive index. ie light is bent (refracted) by the same amount when the light travels from air to either the glass or the glycerol. Therefore when combined together you will only see the exterior substance (in this case glycerol) not what is hidden inside it.

I believe there is a similar affect with diamonds in immersed in water ie. they disappear. This is also apparently a good way to check if a diamond is real.

Why does a test tube filled with glycerol disappear in a beaker filled with glycerol?

Glycerin has essentially the same refractive index as glass, so any light passing through the two is bent equally. Since both are transparent it's not possible for your eye to distinguish the boundary by a change in the angle of refraction, and the glass seems to vanish.
