Plants have a complex set of hormones which control their growth and these hormones are responsible for the 'directional' growth of the plant. Simply put, plants will grow up when they are put on their side because 'up' is where the sun is and plants will always grow towards the sun.

How would the growth of a plant be affected if it were lying on its side?

The plant will still grow upward away from gravity

Why is incorrect to say plants grow towards the sunlight?

They don't actually grow towards the sunlight. As sunlight hits the stem of a plant, the side away from the sunlight, that gets less light, grows faster than the well lit side (or the well lit side grows less than the other side). The faster growth on one side makes the plant tilt in the direction of the sunlight.

How can fern plant reproduce by both sexually and asexually?

fern rhizomes grow branches that can be separated from the plant and grow on its own

Why do plants turn toward the sun?

Imagine for a moment: A plant growing in the center of an empty field, and the sun is rising exactly due east. This means that the eastern side of the plant is facing the sun. During this day, the eastern side of the plant will grow very little while the sun is on the eastern side; however, while the sun is on the eastern side of the plant, the opposite side of our plant will be growing. This causes the plant's western side to grow longer, yet the eastern side closest to the sun remains the same. If you have one side longer than the other, this causes a slouching over effect, just like someone with bad posture. Short answer: A plant's side opposite to the sun grows while the side facing the sun grows very little.

What is the way the plants grows or bends in response to light?

There are auxins in plants (They help the plant in it upward growth). They tend to move away from direct sunlight.so when the plant is directly casted by light, the auxins in the plant move to the other side of the plant that has less light, thus their concentration becomes more on one side (the side with less light). Now since they help in the plant growth, the side of the plant with more of the auxins tends to grow faster than the side with less auxins, therefore the plant bends towards the light.

As long as the roots are in the ground the plant will grow towards the light.

If a plant is tipped on its side the shoots will likely?

If a plant is tipped on its side, the shoot will still grow upward.

What happens to the roots when you place a plant on its side?

in most cases they will change direction and start growing downwards again. if you took the plant to outer space, where there is no gravity, they will grow in any direction.

Is it bad to grow marijuana to close to the side of the pot?

It's bad to grow any plant too close to the side of a pot. It should be in the center.

What do plants grow upward?

plants grow upward, because they are attracted to sunlight. This causes them to follow the light and grow closer to it. For instance if you put a growing plant in a pitch black room, except for, say a flashlight, to its right side for a certain amount of time the plant will grow to its right side.

In plants what is the purpose of auxins?

Im going to improve the answer from before because its a bit rubbish! Auxin is a hormone found mainly at the tip of a plant which helps it grow towards the sun for photosynthesis. When sunlight shines on one side of the plant it will destroy some of the auxin. The other side of the plant wont be in the sunlight, it will be in the shade, so it will have more auxin. This means the shaded side of the plant will grow more than the lit side, so the plant will grow towards the light source. This gives the plant a better chance of survival as it can photosynthesise more. :D

Are used to make corn and wheat grow taller?

Yes because, Auxin is a plant hormone produced in a stem tip that promotes cell elongation. Then Auxin moves to the darker side of the plant causing the cells there to grow larger than the corresponding cells on the lighter side of the plant.

What role do plant hormones play in photo-tropism?

In phototropism, plant hormones control the growth and development of plants due to light. For example, in positive phototropism, auxin, a hormone, speeds up the rate at which plant cells grow. It builds up on the shadier side of a plant, causing those cells to grow faster than the cells on the sunny side of the plant. With longer cells on one side than the other, the stem bends toward the light.

Does a plant grow faster with water or an energy drink?

Plants grow faster with water because, it can get its own glucose through photosynthesis. On the other side energy drinks are full of weird colors and stuff anyway, which wouldn't help the plant to grow but the energy in the drink would probably give the plant the energy to grow faster. Water is free from all the chemicals, and helps the plant to grow faster.

Would a plant still grow upwards if you place it in different directions?

A plant does not grow upwards. A tropism is the growth of a plant in response to a stimulus. This means a plant does not grow upwards, it grows towards a stimulus which in most cases is light. Try it out, put a plant in a dark closet with a light on one side and watch the plant grow towards the light. The results should be clear after a number of days. The plant's response to light is known as phototropism. Hope I helped :)
