ROM ROM is an acronym for Read Only Memory. The advantage of ROM is that its contents do not evaporate when the power is switched off. Therefore the program which needs to execute when the computer is first switched on is stored in a ROM chip on the computer's motherboard. Once the program stored in the ROM chip has finished initialising the hardware, it moves the head of the hard disk to track 0, reads the first sector of track 0 into memory, and then passes control to the short program stored in the first sector of the hard disk.
